As an owner/operator of Miller’s Riverboat Service, I am guiding fishing trips every day, May 15th - September 30, out of Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, Willow and Talkeetna Alaska. I guide rafting fishing trips, jet boat fishing trips and hike in fishing trips, where I target all species of Alaska pacific salmon in addition to trophy Alaska Rainbow trout, Arctic Grayling and Arctic Char. The river is my laboratory where I test all my hand built fishing rods. The rest of the year is spent building and designing fishing rods under the label Susitna Rods. I am a professional fisherman and rod builder and have dedicated thousands of hours in both fields. I got into fishing rod building because I love everything about fishing, love building fishing rods, but most importantly because I want to build tools that give myself and my customers the best opportunity at catching fish.
When it comes to fly fishing for Matsu Valley Rainbow Trout on Willow Creek, the Talkeetna River, the Deshka River and all Susitna River tributaries, I have a lot of confidence in the Rx6 Unity 6wt 9’ 2 or 4 piece fly rod I build. I have tested several fly rods over the years, and the Rx6 Unity 6wt, built with my custom components and spacing , is definitely a winning combination and at an extremely great value. The first thing I really like about this rod is its durability. I have rowed these rods into trees to only watch them bend well past 90 degrees, where most rods will break, and they don’t skip a beat. The durability is achieved through blank design and materials that include a proprietary blend of intermediate modulus graphite, resin and fiberglass. In the Matsu Valley we need to have tough rods. We are pulling 25” Rainbow trout out of log jams, rowing and fishing around wood, in addition to walking through thick brush. Additionally we will hook big salmon while fishing for trout and this rod still has enough backbone to play a decent size silver salmon. The high performance , high modulus, high dollar trout fly rods just don’t handle the abuse necessary to trout fish Matsu Valley waters properly. The Rx6 Unity 6 weight is a great boat rod for all applications including nymphing beads, buggers and ripping streamers. I really like how this rod casts; it’s a moderate fast action that you can feel loading throughout the cast. A fly rod you can feel loading throughout the cast is utopia to experienced casters with great technique, who can appreciate a quality rod. Additionally a moderate / fast action rod is a great trout fly rod for most presentations for entry level fly anglers in south central Alaska. A line that really casts nice with this rod is Rio’s Elite Rio Gold https://farbank.com/products/rio-elite-rio-gold This is a 6 weight floating line that has a 30’ head weight of 168 grains.
The Rx6 Unity 9’ 6wt 2 or 4 piece by Susitna Rods, has an Olympic Green blank finish, chrome guides, metallic black pale gold twisted thread for guide wraps, hook keeper, 1” lean fighting butt, 7” reverse half wells high grade cork handle and CNC machined reel seat with aluminum insert with fish lazer etched in.
I sell these rods for $350, which includes a lifetime warranty and your name or business signed on the rod. This is the best deal for a quality fly rod that I know of.
