King Salmon fishing used to be absolutely world class throughout the Matanuska Susitna Valley. The video shows customer James Lindsey battling what used to be a standard Susitna King of about 25 pounds. King fishing used to be so good and so popular, that even Alaskans from Kenai would drive to Willow in early July to King fish. Willow Creek along with several other Susitna tributaries had a reputation for being a world class King Salmon sport fishery. King Salmon in the 50 pound class were regularly caught. The Susitna drainage King salmon fishery once attracted visitors from around the world to experience this once amazing fishery. The Susitna drainage King Salmon fishery was a really important fishery for south central Alaska residents by providing an opportunity to enjoy catching monster salmon without having to travel far. The economic devastation from not having a viable King Salmon fishery in south central Alaska has not been measured and ignored by the bought and paid for politicians and inept Department of Fish and Game. Not to mention the ineptness of management to allow a keystone species of the watershed to fall by the wayside by not having an action plan. The Wildfish Conservancy does not have sport fishing interests in mind, but at least they can acknowledge Alaska has a King Salmon problem. This is 100% an ocean problem, because the last time you could even retain a King on Willow Creek, Sheep Creek, Little Willow Creek, Montana Creek and Talkeetna River was in 2012. The science is overwhelmly evident, that hatchery pink salmon in conjunction with trawling in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea is and has destroyed Susitna King Salmon. When it comes to fly fishing for Matsu Valley Rainbow Trout on Willow Creek, the Talkeetna River, the Deshka River and all Susitna River tributaries, I have a lot of confidence in the Rx6 Unity 6wt 9’ 2 or 4 piece fly rod I build. I have tested several fly rods over the years, and the Rx6 Unity 6wt, built with my custom components and spacing , is definitely a winning combination and at an extremely great value. The first thing I really like about this rod is its durability. I have rowed these rods into trees to only watch them bend well past 90 degrees, where most rods will break, and they don’t skip a beat. The durability is achieved through blank design and materials that include a proprietary blend of intermediate modulus graphite, resin and fiberglass. In the Matsu Valley we need to have tough rods. We are pulling 25” Rainbow trout out of log jams, rowing and fishing around wood, in addition to walking through thick brush. Additionally we will hook big salmon while fishing for trout and this rod still has enough backbone to play a decent size silver salmon. The high performance , high modulus, high dollar trout fly rods just don’t handle the abuse necessary to trout fish Matsu Valley waters properly. You reflect back on days before the smart phone, like 15 years ago, you think about fishing and guiding on the Talkeetna River and you'd see at least 1 50lb. king landed a day. Walls of people- everybody catching King salmon. Guiding King salmon on the Deshka River has always been good, but what has come back the last 4 years is an abomination. I sincerely hope our kids and the next generation will see King returns on Willow Creek as I saw back in high school and my early years of guiding. Guiding float trips on Willow Creek for King Salmon are some of my greatest memories. Amber and I chose Wasilla, Alaska as our home because of how close it was to so many awesome opportunities for sport fishing for King Salmon. Just a short drive from our home and we able to guide salmon fishing trips on the Little Susitna, Deshka River and Susitna River. King salmon are really the reason we live in Alaska.

The scenery of the Deshka River and journey down the Susitna River from Deshka Landing is worth the price of admission on its own. On the Deshka River, there is a tremendous opportunity to see moose, beaver, eagles and abundant waterfowl. On a clear day on the Susitna River boat ride down to the Deshka River, views of Denali are breathtaking.
